Barbarian: The Horror Hit Finally Arrives on 4K Blu-ray

by : Jane McGonigal

Zach Cregger's highly praised horror feature, "Barbarian," is finally making its way to a physical format with a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray SteelBook edition scheduled for this summer. This long-awaited release follows a persistent public appeal from the director himself. The new edition will feature unsettling artwork from Creepy Duck Design, depicting the film's eerie Airbnb setting against a crimson sky. This development is a significant win for physical media enthusiasts and fans of the movie, offering them a chance to own a high-quality version of this modern horror classic.

A notable highlight of "Barbarian's" upcoming physical release is the inclusion of a variety of bonus materials. Fans can look forward to an exclusive audio commentary track featuring writer-director Zach Cregger and producer Roy Lee, providing unique insights into the film's creation. Additionally, a special feature titled "Behind Barbarian" will offer interviews with Cregger, key cast members, and crew, delving into the defining horror elements and the inspirations behind the movie. The collection will also contain never-before-seen deleted scenes, promising an enhanced viewing experience for dedicated fans.

For an extended period, Cregger has been a vocal advocate for a physical release of "Barbarian." Approximately a year ago, he expressed his frustration to Bloody Disgusting, stating, "I have banged the drum, made phone calls, and tried my best to get some sort of physical media. I'm not making headway, and it kind of bums me out." His persistent efforts have evidently paid off, as 20th Century Studios has now confirmed the SteelBook release, fulfilling a long-held wish for the director and the film's fanbase.

"Barbarian" served as Cregger's directorial debut and instantly established his credibility in the horror genre, despite his background as a founding member of the comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U' Know. The film garnered significant critical acclaim and achieved remarkable box office success, grossing over $45 million against a modest $4.5 million production budget. Cregger followed this triumph with "Weapons" last year, an even bigger hit that earned $270 million on a $38 million budget. "Weapons" even received some rare award-season recognition for a horror film, with Amy Madigan earning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.

Cregger's next project, an adaptation of the "Resident Evil" game series, is currently generating considerable buzz and cautious optimism. While previous "Resident Evil" film adaptations have often faced criticism, Cregger's involvement brings a fresh perspective and a sense of prestige to the franchise. As a self-proclaimed avid fan of the games, Cregger's attention to detail is evident; the film's trailer notably references a specific in-game gaffe of wasting ammunition by missing a stationary lock. This reboot promises a new take, focusing on an ordinary individual caught in the zombie apocalypse, reminiscent of a player being transported into Raccoon City during the events of "Resident Evil 2." The film is slated for release on September 18th.

The physical release of "Barbarian" is scheduled for August 11th. The SteelBook package will include both a 4K UHD Blu-ray and a standard Blu-ray disc. For audio options, it will feature English, French, and Spanish 5.1 DTS-HDMA, as well as Dolby 2.0 Digital Descriptive Audio for English. Subtitles will also be available in these languages, ensuring a comprehensive and accessible viewing experience for a broad audience.
