Numerous observers have attributed the conclusion of Bungie's seminal looter-shooter to Sony, subsequent to its substantial 2022 acquisition of the developer. The decision to champion Marathon as a successor has also sparked debate. However, the situation is more nuanced than it initially appears.

According to former community manager Liana Ruppert, the challenges Bungie faced predated Sony's involvement. Ruppert disclosed via social media that "Bungie was teetering on the edge before the Sony acquisition. Had it not been acquired then, the studio was perilously close to ceasing operations, at least concerning Destiny. It was an urgent takeover."

Even from an external perspective, it was evident that Bungie encountered difficulties well before its integration with Sony. The renowned studio had parted ways with Activision in 2019 to independently publish the MMO-lite title. Despite the acquisition, financial targets remain elusive.

On a brighter note, the final content update for Destiny 2 has temporarily boosted its player engagement, and a fan-led appeal for a "Destiny 3" is gaining traction, despite the long odds. Perhaps the proposed "Destiny Infinity" concept, intended to revitalize the series, is not yet beyond reach.
