Despite pop superstar Ariana Grande's announcement that she is stepping back from the London revival of Stephen Sondheim's "Sunday in the Park With George," the production is moving forward as scheduled for a summer 2027 premiere at the Barbican.

Initially, Grande was slated to perform the dual roles of Dot and Marie alongside her "Wicked" film co-star, Jonathan Bailey, who will portray painter George Seurat. This arrangement would have offered a unique opportunity for fans to witness both "Wicked" leads performing live on stage. Ticket sales were originally planned to commence after Grande's "The Eternal Sunshine Tour" concludes in the UK on September 1. However, Grande's representatives confirmed Sunday evening that she intends to take a hiatus from public engagements following her tour, which includes her departure from the theatrical production. Producers from Empire Street Productions have expressed their full understanding and support for Grande's decision, wishing her well.

The acclaimed revival will be helmed by Tony and Olivier Award-winning director Marianne Elliot, with set and costume design by Tom Scutt. Auditions for the ensemble cast have been ongoing in London throughout the summer, indicating the production's continued momentum. The show will open at the Barbican in summer 2027, with further casting details to be announced in due course.

This decision comes amidst growing public concern for Grande's well-being, particularly regarding her physical appearance. The artist has previously revealed her diagnosis of PTSD following the 2017 Manchester concert bombing. Her representatives indicated that Grande is looking forward to concluding her tour "healthily and happily" before taking a much-needed break from the intense public scrutiny she has faced.
