Disney+ and NPO Collaborate on "Wolven" Adaptation for Dutch Audience
Disney+, the streaming platform from Walt Disney, and the Dutch public broadcasting organization NPO have joined forces to introduce a Dutch version of the unscripted reality program, titled "Wolven: het spel van list en bedrog," to audiences in the Netherlands. This series is internationally recognized as "Werewolves," and its local adaptation marks a significant collaboration between a major global entertainment company and a national public broadcaster.
The show's premise involves a group of unrelated individuals, referred to as the Villagers, competing for a reward in an isolated woodland community. Among them are the Werewolves, a covert faction whose objective is to systematically eliminate other contestants and seize the ultimate prize. This intriguing setup promises a blend of strategy, suspense, and psychological gameplay that has proven successful in previous adaptations across Europe.
This initiative represents a novel operational model for the public broadcaster. Starting August 29, "Wolven" will be broadcast on BNNVARA via NPO 1 and simultaneously available for streaming on NPO Start and Disney+, with new episodes released weekly. The production of "Wolven" is managed by SimpelZodiak, a division of Banijay Benelux. This Dutch venture follows successful runs of the format in France, where it originated, and Germany. Disney+ views this as part of a broader European strategy to partner with free-to-air broadcasters, including collaborations with Atresmedia and RTVE in Spain, ITVX in the United Kingdom, Rai in Italy, ARD and ZDF in Germany, and SIC in Portugal. These partnerships highlight a mutual dedication to promoting and backing local narratives.
The alliance between Disney+ and NPO exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to content distribution and audience engagement. By combining Disney's global brand recognition and appeal to younger demographics with NPO's local expertise and public service commitment, this partnership aims to broaden the reach of quality Dutch programming and offer diverse storytelling to a wider audience. This collaborative spirit not only strengthens the local creative industry but also enriches the viewing experience for consumers across various platforms.
