Gothic Remake: Your Guide to Navigating the World with a Map

by : Sid Meier

Navigating the expansive world of Gothic Remake can be a challenging endeavor, especially given the absence of a traditional compass. Players must proactively seek out and acquire a map to orient themselves within the game’s detailed environments. This guide offers essential strategies for obtaining a map, including a valuable tip for reducing acquisition costs, and provides insight into the practicalities of in-game cartography.

Successfully traversing the colony and its diverse locations, such as the Old Camp, becomes significantly easier with a map. While these maps don't pinpoint every NPC or specific quest objective, they offer a fundamental understanding of the terrain. Moreover, players have the option to personalize their maps by adding custom markers, a feature that proves invaluable for remembering critical points of interest as they progress through their adventures.

Acquiring Your Map in Gothic Remake

Upon reaching the Old Camp, you'll discover two primary sources for maps: Graham, the dedicated cartographer, and Dexter, a merchant located in the market area. Graham offers both a comprehensive Colony map, covering the wider world, and a localized Old Camp map. However, a shrewd player can secure the Colony map at a more favorable price by purchasing it from Dexter instead of Graham. This cost-saving measure is particularly beneficial in the early stages of the game when resources are often limited. Graham can typically be found near the north gate of the Old Camp or by the cooking cauldron, recognizable by his short black beard and standard digger attire.

Dexter, on the other hand, resides in the southern market district of the Old Camp. To locate him, proceed from the north gate towards the castle entrance, then turn right and follow the path past the water and Gravo's shack. Continue along this route, circling the castle until you reach the market adorned with hanging cloth coverings. Dexter is usually positioned on the right side of this area during daylight hours, often by the pelt racks. He sells the Colony map for a mere 24 ore nuggets, a significant discount compared to Graham’s price of 44 nuggets. While Graham also sells an Old Camp map for 35 ore, it is generally recommended to prioritize the Colony map due to its broader utility and the Old Camp's relatively small and easily memorized layout. You will quickly become familiar with the Old Camp's features, making a dedicated map for it less of a necessity.
