Imax is set to significantly enhance its footprint in the Australian and New Zealand cinema markets through a new agreement with exhibition leader Hoyts Cinemas. This strategic expansion involves the deployment of ten cutting-edge laser projection theaters, building upon an earlier four-screen commitment. The initiative aims to capitalize on the region's strong demand for premium cinematic experiences and the recent resurgence in box office performance.

In a landmark announcement on April 29, 2026, Imax officially unveiled a substantial partnership with Hoyts Cinemas, a prominent exhibition company operating across Australia and New Zealand. This collaboration will introduce ten new state-of-the-art laser Imax cinema venues, adding to a previously secured deal for four theaters. The cumulative effect of these agreements will see a total of 14 new Imax screens integrated into Hoyts' network by 2028, significantly boosting the availability of immersive cinematic viewing options in the region.

Damian Keogh, CEO and President of Hoyts Group, expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion, emphasizing that the investment underscores the company's commitment to innovation and maintaining its leadership in premium cinema. He highlighted that the move would grant more audiences access to Imax's technologically advanced and deeply immersive movie-watching experience. This development comes as the Australian film market, much like its global counterparts, is witnessing a robust recovery in box office revenues post-pandemic, with premium formats like Imax playing a crucial role in driving this momentum. The Imax presence in Australia has already grown substantially, from a single location in 2022 to ten currently, with an additional 14 in the pipeline.

Giovanni Dolci, Imax's Chief Commercial Officer, noted that Australia stands out as one of the company's highest-performing global markets, where consumer demand for Imax experiences has consistently outpaced the existing infrastructure. He affirmed that working alongside Hoyts, a partner recognized for its excellence in delivering premium cinema, Imax is poised to swiftly meet this burgeoning demand. In 2025, Imax reported a record AUS$18.6 million (US$12.1 million) in Australian box office earnings, propelled by successful releases such as Project Hail Mary and highly anticipated films like Mortal Kombat 2 and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, which were captured using proprietary Imax cameras. Hoyts Cinemas currently manages a vast network of over 500 screens throughout Australia and New Zealand.
