The 9th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) is poised to honor the distinguished South Korean director Lee Chang-dong with a Lifetime Achievement Award, a testament to his significant contributions to the world of cinema. The festival's comprehensive program, recently unveiled in Kuala Lumpur, promises an immersive cinematic experience from July 18 to 25. Highlighting a diverse array of global and regional productions, the event will feature 65 films hailing from 35 nations and territories, presented in 27 distinct languages, emphasizing its commitment to cultural exchange and artistic appreciation.

During the festival's announcement, MIFFest president Joanne Goh lauded Lee Chang-dong, describing his films as works that transcend geographical and generational boundaries, deeply resonating with audiences through their candidness, empathy, and a profound grasp of the human condition. As part of this special tribute, two of Lee's seminal films will be screened: "Peppermint Candy," a poignant reverse-chronological narrative that delves into the aftermath of personal and national trauma, and "Oasis," a compelling romance exploring themes of love, isolation, and inherent human dignity. These selections aim to provide attendees with a deeper insight into his distinctive storytelling and artistic vision.

Adding to the list of luminaries, Chinese actor and director Wu Jing will be recognized with the festival's Excellent Achievement in Film Award. This accolade coincides with a screening of "Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert," helmed by the renowned director Yuen Woo-Ping. The festival itself will commence with the global premiere of the Malaysian feature "BAGA: Tomorrow Belongs To No One," directed by Ariff Zulkarnain, a narrative centered on intertwined lives in a fishing village. Concluding the event is "Yellow Letters," directed by İlker Çatak, which previously garnered the Golden Bear at the 76th Berlin Film Festival, telling the story of an artist couple facing state scrutiny.

The International Competition segment, dedicated to emerging filmmakers with a maximum of three narrative features, will feature ten films. This year's jury, presided over by Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, includes notable figures such as Taiwanese director Midi Z, Thai actor-producer Ananda Everingham, Hong Kong production designer Man Lim-chung, and Malaysian actress Sharifah Amani, ensuring a rich and diverse perspective in evaluating the cinematic works.

MIFFest introduces two new programming initiatives this year: "Korean Cinema: A Culture in Motion," showcasing contemporary Korean films including "Bluefish" and "Mr. Kim Goes to the Cinema," and "Russian Film Week," presented in collaboration with the Russian Ministry of Culture and Roskino, featuring both classic and contemporary Russian cinematic masterpieces. Returning sections like ASEAN On Screen, Hong Kong Cinema in Flux, and New Rhythms of Indian Cinema will continue to highlight the vibrant cinematic landscapes of these regions. Furthermore, the Open Air Cinema will offer a curated selection of Malaysian films and short films, and the festival will unveil the second season of its K-Style microdrama series, "Impian Di Seoul."

The festival aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of global and regional cinema, celebrating artistic excellence and fostering cultural dialogue through a thoughtfully curated program that includes premieres, tributes, and diverse thematic strands.
