Mexican filmmaker Lila Avilés, renowned for her work on 'Totém,' has officially completed the production of her newest feature, 'Cábula.' An exclusive preview image from the film has been released, offering a glimpse into her latest cinematic endeavor. Avilés introduced this project during the recent Venice Gap-Financing Market, an event that facilitates connections between filmmakers and potential investors.

The narrative of 'Cábula' unfolds in the fictional Mexican locale of Mexicalpan, focusing on Toña, a profoundly committed educator who champions her students' creative development. When an opportunity arises for Toña and her class to showcase their community in the capital, they encounter a satirical depiction of societal elites who attempt to appropriate their cultural heritage. Despite confronting numerous obstacles and betrayals, Toña's conviction in the transformative power of learning and her vocational calling remain unwavering.

Co-written by Avilés and Miguel Vasallo, 'Cábula' is being brought to the screen by Nicolás Celis through Cuadernos de Cine, his Mexico City-based production house, which operates alongside Pimienta Films. Maria Zamora of Elastica Films also serves as a co-producer, with a cast featuring Teresita Sánchez, Gabriela Cartol, and Montserrat Marañón. Avilés's latest work follows her critically acclaimed 'Totém,' which earned the Ecumenical Prize at the 2023 Berlinale, and her debut film, 'The Chambermaid,' recognized at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival.
