MFS Introduces New ETFs to Capitalize on Broadening Market Leadership in Small-Mid Caps and Global Value

by : Bola Sokunbi

MFS Investment Management has recently expanded its actively managed exchange-traded fund (ETF) offerings, introducing two new funds designed to capture shifting market dynamics. This strategic move aligns with a broader trend of market leadership diversifying beyond the long-standing dominance of large-cap U.S. stocks. These new ETFs aim to provide investors with exposure to promising segments of the equity market that have begun to demonstrate significant momentum.

The newly launched funds are the MFS Blended Research Small-Mid Cap ETF (BRSM) and the MFS Active International Value ETF (MIVL). BRSM focuses on U.S. companies and real estate investment trusts (REITs) within the market capitalization range of the Russell 2500 Index. It employs a proprietary blended research methodology, integrating fundamental analysis of financial health and industry outlook with quantitative factors like price momentum and earnings trends to construct its portfolio. MIVL, on the other hand, primarily invests in non-U.S. value stocks, with the flexibility to allocate a portion of its assets to emerging markets. This fund is not constrained by company size and seeks out businesses trading below their estimated intrinsic value, maintaining diversification across various countries, sectors, and regions.

The introduction of these ETFs reflects a growing interest in small- and mid-cap stocks, which have shown notable outperformance compared to large-cap benchmarks in 2026. This resurgence is attributed to a more favorable interest-rate environment and an optimistic economic outlook. For instance, the Russell 2500 Index has recorded an approximate 15% year-to-date return, surpassing the S&P 500 Index's roughly 8% gain. Concurrently, international equities have begun to exhibit strength, narrowing valuation gaps that expanded during the prolonged rise of U.S. technology giants, making global markets increasingly attractive.

These additions build upon MFS's existing ETF platform, complementing earlier products such as the MFS Blended Research International Equity ETF (BRIE). The MIVL fund further strengthens the firm's portfolio of actively managed international equity ETFs, broadening its reach in global investment opportunities. This expansion underscores MFS's commitment to providing diverse investment solutions that adapt to evolving market conditions and investor demands.
