Subnautica 2: Comprehensive Salt Procurement Guide

by : Hideo Kojima

Securing salt is a critical endeavor for any player navigating the ocean depths of Subnautica 2. Beyond enhancing culinary creations, this vital resource is instrumental in constructing essential base components like power storage units and the indispensable power cells required for crafting your initial submarine, the Tadpole. This comprehensive guide outlines prime locations and strategies for efficiently gathering salt across different stages of your aquatic adventure.

Initial Salt Discovery and Early Game Farming

In the early phases of Subnautica 2, salt manifests as distinctive pink, crystalline formations scattered across the seabed. Its primary uses extend beyond mere food enhancement, serving as a fundamental ingredient for crafting base power units, which allow for efficient energy storage, and power cells, crucial for the construction of the Tadpole mini-submarine. For initial foraging, direct your exploration towards Chap's Blackbox, a convenient spot accessible without advanced gear.

To pinpoint salt in the initial stages of gameplay, head to Chap's Blackbox. Whether departing from your Lifepod or the Welcome Center, a short swim to the southeast will lead you to this area. While the salt yield here is modest, it requires no special equipment like a sonic resonator or heat tolerance adaptations, making it ideal for beginners. Upon arrival, dive into the circular ravine surrounding the prominent pillar that breaches the water's surface. At its base, you will uncover several small salt fragments. Utilize the Blackbox's hatch to replenish your oxygen supply as you gather these resources. Before leaving, interact with the biobed to expand your inventory capacity. Further exploration around the cave's exit and a slight turn to the left after exiting the hatch will reveal additional salt deposits. Conveniently, this location also provides access to sulfur without the need for heat adaptation.

Optimal Salt Farming and Advanced Acquisition Techniques

As you progress in Subnautica 2, unlocking the heat tolerance adaptation becomes paramount for accessing the most efficient salt farming locations. This crucial upgrade is acquired by advancing through the game's main narrative, which involves following new signals, interacting with various blackboxes, and ultimately using a sonic resonator to heal the Angel Comb. Once heat tolerance is secured, returning to Chap's Blackbox will open up opportunities for a significantly higher salt yield.

Once you possess the heat tolerance adaptation, return to Chap's Blackbox. From this familiar point, swim approximately 100 meters northeast. Beyond the man-made structures, you will discover two substantial salt crystals resting on the seabed. Employ your sonic resonator to fracture these deposits, each yielding around five pieces of salt. Continue your journey north-northeast along the ocean floor to uncover a third deposit. Then, adjust your course northward towards the large Coral Crabs, where an additional four salt deposits await. Successfully harvesting all crystals in this area should provide you with approximately 35 pieces of salt. For late-game players, after investigating the Tadpole Pens and reaching the Alien Ruins, a new efficient route emerges. Head north-northwest from the Alien Ruins signal towards a high rock formation, where four salt deposits are found near a hydrothermal vent. Further northwest, two more deposits can be found on a cliff edge. Diving to a depth of 215 meters north-northeast from there will reveal three additional deposits within a small chasm. Although salt deposits do not regenerate naturally, once you have collected atacamite, troilite, and axum bacterial cultures, you can construct a metal farm at your base to ensure an endless supply of salt.
