Hisamatsu Takeo has officially resumed his position as the Festival Director for the Tokyo International Film Festival, commencing April 14. This appointment signifies his second term in this pivotal role, having previously served from 2017 to 2021. His return follows the departure of outgoing chairman Ando Hiroyasu, who will conclude his tenure on May 31.

Under Hisamatsu's renewed leadership, the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival is scheduled to take place from October 26 to November 4. The festival will once again transform the vibrant Hibiya-Yurakucho-Marunouchi-Ginza district into a hub for cinematic celebration. Film submissions for this upcoming edition are currently open, with a deadline set for July 7, inviting filmmakers worldwide to participate.

A Distinguished Career in Cinema: Five Decades of Industry Experience

Hisamatsu Takeo brings nearly five decades of extensive experience to his role, encompassing various facets of the film industry in both Japan and the United States. His illustrious career includes significant contributions at Shochiku, where he excelled in theatrical operations. He also held prominent distribution positions at Warner Bros. Pictures Japan across two separate periods and successfully managed his own production and acquisition company, My Way Movies, prior to his initial appointment at TIFF.

Ando Hiroyasu's Legacy: Transforming the Festival Landscape

Ando Hiroyasu, who took on the chairmanship in July 2019, has left an indelible mark on the festival's trajectory. During his seven-year leadership, he spearheaded a significant transformation, including relocating the primary festival venue from Roppongi to its current vibrant location. His efforts also led to a comprehensive restructuring of the programming lineup and the successful launch of the TIFF Lounge conversation series, enhancing the festival's global appeal and intellectual discourse. In recognition of his profound contributions, Ando will be honored with the Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government.

Looking Ahead: Continued Growth and International Engagement

Ando Hiroyasu reflected on his achievements, noting the substantial growth in audience numbers, revenues, and the participation of international guests under his leadership. He expressed confidence in the festival's future, highlighting the importance of continuous striving for excellence under its new leadership. The main international competition welcomes feature films, including documentaries and animations, completed after January 1, 2026, which are making their Japanese premiere. Additionally, the Asian Future section, dedicated to showcasing first, second, or third features from emerging Asian and Middle Eastern directors, is also accepting entries. Last year's 38th edition saw an impressive 1,970 submissions from 108 countries and regions, with Annemarie Jacir's "Palestine 36" receiving the prestigious Tokyo Grand Prix. The companion market, TIFFCOM, is scheduled to run from October 28 to October 30.
