Valve Faced 'Dire' Steam Machine Supply Issues

The current climate for acquiring computer hardware or launching new tech products is exceptionally challenging. The ongoing global RAM scarcity has caused memory and storage prices to skyrocket. This predicament is particularly evident in the pricing of the Steam Machine, whose entry-level model is currently listed at $1,049. Even Valve itself has expressed a desire for the product to be more affordable.

However, having a product available, regardless of its price point, is preferable to having none at all. This was a very real possibility, according to Valve. In discussions with Valve engineers Yazan Aldehayyat and Pierre-Loup Griffais, insights were shared regarding the company's inventory of Steam Machines as it prepares for shipment. While the stock is not as robust as it would have been before the RAM crisis, it is significantly better than the grim outlook at the beginning of the year, when Valve was uncertain about having any units ready.

Griffais noted that the current inventory of Steam Machines is "slightly less" than what was originally anticipated in a market free of component shortages. Nonetheless, Valve has successfully accumulated "a considerable quantity" in comparison to early predictions. He candidly stated, "Things appeared quite grim at the year's outset. We were unsure if we would have any at all."

Considering the initial bleak forecast, any quantity of units now seems like a victory. Aldehayyat emphasized that even under optimal conditions, achieving sufficient supply for a launch day is inherently difficult, if not impossible. Griffais concurred, adding that from Valve's perspective, they've reached a "fairly good position." He further explained that typically, initial demand for such products constitutes a large portion of the first year's sales, making it challenging for factories to keep pace. This often results in a short-term imbalance between availability and consumer interest, hence the implementation of the Steam Machine reservation system, which aims to distribute units equitably.

Griffais expressed his pride in the sourcing team's efforts, stating, "I'm genuinely proud of our progress; our sourcing team performed exceptionally well. I believe the quantities we have are commendable given the circumstances, and our aspiration is to fulfill demand as rapidly as possible." Ultimately, securing any supply is a positive outcome.
