World Cup Success Boosts Canal+ Group's First-Half Earnings
Canal+ Group experienced a robust first half, primarily fueled by its strategic acquisition of MultiChoice Group in Africa and the widespread appeal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. These factors collectively spurred substantial subscriber expansion, particularly within the South African market, validating the company's investment and strategic direction. The strong performance positions Canal+ favorably to achieve its ambitious financial targets for the year.
Canal+ Reports Significant Gains Driven by MultiChoice Acquisition and World Cup Excitement
Paris, France – On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Canal+ Group announced impressive financial results for the first half of the year, largely attributing its success to the recent $2 billion acquisition of African media powerhouse, MultiChoice Group. Maxime Saada, CEO of Canal+, revealed that the integration of MultiChoice has begun to yield the anticipated benefits, with the company already achieving half of its projected €250 million ($284 million) synergy target. Saada expressed confidence in reaching full-year and medium-term financial guidance.
A major contributor to this growth was the immense popularity of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The global football spectacle led to a remarkable 40 percent surge in subscriber acquisition across MultiChoice territories compared to the same period in 2025. Notably, June 2026 recorded the highest number of new subscribers in South Africa in a decade. This success was bolstered by strategic content and marketing initiatives, including an impactful World Cup advertising campaign featuring acclaimed actor Idris Elba and the launch of the Novelas+ channel in South Africa.
Market analysts, including BNP Paribas' Nicolas Langlet, have reacted positively to MultiChoice's momentum. Langlet highlighted the sequential improvement in MultiChoice's performance, crediting the World Cup's success and the initial positive impacts of key growth-boosting strategies. He anticipates continued subscriber base improvements and positive organic sales growth through the latter half of 2026, as the new strategy and reinvestment plan take full effect.
Beyond its pay-TV operations, Canal+'s production arm, StudioCanal, also reported an "excellent six months." Saada acknowledged the box-office success of films like Guru in France and Pressure in the U.S. Looking ahead, StudioCanal's robust pipeline includes high-profile projects such as Paddington 4, Zack Snyder’s remake of Escape From New York, its inaugural major South African production The Road Home, and Danny Boyle’s Ink, suggesting sustained creative and commercial momentum. The "content production, distribution and other" segment, encompassing StudioCanal and the streaming service Dailymotion, saw a 9.9 percent rise in first-half revenue, although adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) experienced a slight 3 percent dip.
Overall, Canal+ Group's total revenue escalated by 40 percent to €4.29 billion ($4.88 billion), predominantly driven by the MultiChoice acquisition. Excluding the acquisition's impact, organic growth stood at 1.4 percent. Adjusted EBIT saw a substantial 68 percent increase, or a 13 percent rise when MultiChoice's contributions were excluded.
This financial report underscores the successful synergy between strategic acquisitions and engaging content. The 2026 FIFA World Cup served as a powerful catalyst, drawing new audiences and solidifying Canal+'s presence in key emerging markets. The results demonstrate the critical role that major sporting events can play in driving subscription growth for media companies, alongside a strong content pipeline that caters to diverse audiences. As global entertainment markets continue to evolve, Canal+'s strategy of expanding its footprint and investing in compelling programming appears to be a winning formula.
