Xpress Global Systems Celebrates Four Decades of Specialized Freight Excellence
Four Decades of Navigating Complex Logistics with Unwavering Dedication
The Genesis of a Specialized Carrier: Addressing Unique Freight Challenges
In 1986, amidst the booming carpet industry of Dalton, Georgia, a new entity, then known as Crown Transport, emerged. Its core mission was to address the formidable logistics challenges posed by oversized, delicate carpet rolls—freight that traditional less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers found difficult to manage. These heavy, non-stackable, and commodity-sensitive items demanded a specialized approach, laying the groundwork for what would become Xpress Global Systems.
Adapting to Industry Shifts: From Carpet Boom to National Expansion
The 1980s and 1990s witnessed an explosion in the U.S. flooring market, with retailers like Home Depot becoming major players. Crown Transport capitalized on this growth by perfecting the transport of these challenging goods, a niche that competitors largely avoided. This early success positioned the company for strategic acquisitions, including CSI Reeves and Rosedale Transport's floorcovering business, significantly expanding its operational footprint across the nation.
Strategic Growth and Diversification: Forging Key Partnerships and Adapting Services
By the late 1990s, the company, then operating as CSI/Crown, began a pivotal partnership with The Home Depot, providing warehousing and distribution services in Las Vegas. This collaboration proved instrumental in its evolution. The early 2000s saw a rebranding to Xpress Global Systems and an initial, albeit short-lived, foray into airfreight diversification. Despite a divestiture of its airfreight operations in 2005, this period was crucial in refining XGS's focus on its core floorcovering expertise and solidifying its resilience.
Continuous Network Enhancement and Service Excellence
Under private equity ownership, XGS continued its strategic expansion, acquiring Pinner Transportation in 2008 and integrating several Mohawk Industries distribution centers into its network. A key development in 2015 was the launch of an expedited carpet program with Home Depot, elevating XGS from a mere carrier to a strategic partner. Subsequent acquisitions and a renewed focus on independent ownership further fueled growth, allowing for significant investment in technology and expanded service offerings beyond flooring, including 3PL solutions and general commodities.
Embracing Evolution: Modern Logistics and Future Aspirations
The logistics landscape for flooring has transformed, with luxury vinyl products now often shipped as pallets rather than rolls. XGS has adapted by actively importing and handling these new formats, alongside related damage-sensitive items such as doors, windows, and cabinets. With a robust technology stack enabling real-time visibility and instant quoting, XGS maintains consistently high on-time performance. As it enters its fifth decade, XGS aims for substantial revenue growth, leveraging its unique blend of specialized expertise and agile, customer-centric operations to continue excelling in the toughest freight segments.
