In the expansive world of Gothic Remake, players embarking on the challenging journey to join the New Camp faction will encounter a particularly intricate questline. Beyond the initial tasks of distributing swampweed and assisting the Rice Lord with his prior concerns, a new challenge emerges: the "Up to His Neck" quest, which requires the protagonist to locate the elusive foreman, Bran. This guide aims to streamline the process, enabling players to efficiently navigate the necessary steps and earn the Rice Lord's crucial endorsement, all while offering valuable tips to enhance the gaming experience.
Navigating the "Up to His Neck" Quest in Gothic Remake
The quest to find Bran initiates with the Rice Lord tasking the player with uncovering the whereabouts of his missing foreman. To begin, players must engage with the farmers within the New Camp. While many will offer no pertinent information, approaching Malon with a respectful demeanor will reveal a vital clue: Bran was last seen heading towards a cave situated near a specific pond, a location frequented by Jacko and his associates. This information is crucial for pinpointing Bran’s last known location.
Upon receiving Malon's revelation, players should exit the main gates of the New Camp and proceed towards the aforementioned pond and the small encampment beyond it. Here, a cave entrance guarded by a bandit awaits. It is highly advisable to save the game at this juncture, preparing for the encounter within. Inside the cave, at the top of a set of stairs, Jacko will be found. Engaging him will lead to a one-on-one combat scenario, where players can utilize weapons to secure victory. After defeating Jacko, he will disclose that Bran, in an attempt to settle his debts, was sent to pilfer the tavern’s basement.
For players who find the combat against Jacko challenging, several preparatory steps can be taken. Acquiring superior weaponry, such as buying an item from Fisk in the Old Camp marketplace, or donning protective gear like the Digger's Dress from the Free Mine, can significantly improve combat prowess. Furthermore, learning the fire bolt rune, obtainable through “The Price of Magic” quest, can provide an offensive edge. Training one-handed weapon skills with Cord near the training dummies overlooking the lake tavern in the New Camp is another viable option. Even if unable to defeat Jacko, progressing past this fight is possible, though it means forfeiting the powerful Bloodfly Sting mace he yields.
The next phase involves reaching the tavern’s basement. Located by the lake up the hill in the New Camp, near the main cave entrance, the tavern offers two paths to its cellar. One involves lockpicking the door behind Silas, while a more discreet method is to swim beneath the tavern. This secret entrance can be discovered by persuading Rayk, or by simply heading to the pier behind the tavern, near the fishing rod and chimney stack. Diving into the water here will reveal a cave entrance with a strong current, leading directly into the flooded cellar. Players can surface for air within the cellar if needed. Traversing through this submerged passage, players will eventually find Bran’s body near the stairs, left of the door. The basement is dimly lit, so careful observation is necessary. Looting Bran's body will yield a crucial note, and additional chests in the room can be lockpicked for extra items, although this is optional. After gathering all necessary evidence, return to Silas to confront him about Bran's fate.
With all information gathered, players must report back to the Rice Lord to conclude the “Up to His Neck” quest. The primary reward for completing this mission is the Rice Lord’s invaluable backing, which is a significant step towards full membership in the New Camp. Additionally, players will receive a substantial 300 XP, a considerable boost in the early stages of the game.
The successful completion of the “Up to His Neck” quest offers more than just in-game rewards; it provides a deeper insight into the intricate social dynamics and precarious existence within the Colony. It highlights the desperate measures individuals are forced to take, like Bran's ill-fated attempt at robbery to repay debts, and the tough choices protagonists must make to navigate a world rife with danger and moral ambiguity. This quest serves as a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of the environment, emphasizing the importance of strategic alliances, combat readiness, and keen observational skills to survive and thrive.
