Journey to Middle-earth with 'Magic: The Gathering'

Later this month, 'Magic: The Gathering' will transport players back to the beloved world of Middle-earth through a brand-new series of collectible cards. This exclusive collection draws from J.R.R. Tolkien's enduring literary works, offering fans a fresh way to experience the epic narrative.

Unveiling the 'The Hobbit' Collection: A Blend of Story and Strategy

Scheduled for release on August 14, 'The Hobbit' set is designed to merge the rich storytelling of Tolkien's saga with Magic's distinctive strategic gameplay. Players can look forward to cards depicting familiar allies and formidable adversaries, including a prominent card featuring Smaug the Magnificent. The collection will also boast artist cards inspired by classic Middle-earth aesthetics and cards featuring Dwarven script.

An Exclusive Look at 'Glóin the Mighty'

Among the highlights of 'The Hobbit' set are two distinct versions of a new card, 'Glóin the Mighty,' exclusively revealed by Variety. This card portrays Glóin, a brave dwarf warrior, engaged in battle with a goblin. This scene captures a memorable moment from the book where Glóin and Thorin Oakenshield valiantly defend their kin and Bilbo Baggins during their perilous journey. Glóin is also recognized as the father of Gimli, a key member of Frodo's fellowship in 'The Lord of the Rings.'

Expanding Horizons with 'Universes Beyond'

This 'The Hobbit' collection is a part of Magic's 'Universes Beyond' initiative, which integrates well-known third-party intellectual properties into the trading card game. Building on the success of the 'The Lord of the Rings' set launched in June 2023, this new collection continues the tradition of adapting cherished fantasy worlds into the Magic universe.

Future Collaborations and Mainline Sets

Earlier this month, Wizards of the Coast, the creators of 'Magic: The Gathering,' announced their plans for 2027. These plans include three core Magic sets and three unrevealed 'Universes Beyond' collaborations with external IPs, akin to 'The Hobbit.' While details on these future UB collections remain under wraps, they are slated for release in April, August, and November of next year. Additionally, Magic will roll out three mainline sets that will kick off a new storyline within its own universe: 'Nauctis: The Sunken Realm' (February 2027), 'Kamigawa: Titanbreach' (June 2027), and 'Zhalfir' (October 2027).
